Bringing DNA Sequencing to the High School Classroom

Christopher Lausted and Dr. Danielle Vermaak were featured guests of an ISB Research Roundtable presentation. The husband-and-wife team detailed the planning and rollout of a DNA sequencing curriculum project that was tested in Vermaak’s Lincoln High School science classroom in Seattle.

High School Scientist Targets Sepsis, Earns $25,000 Scholarship Along the Way

Sriharshita Musunuri, 17, is looking to find and stop what causes sepsis, the top killer in American hospitals. She is collaborating with several ISB staff members, including mentor Chris Lausted, and just earned a $25,000 scholarship for her work.

Lessons I Learned from My 17 Years as ISB President

Lee Hood co-founded Institute for Systems Biology in 2000, and has served as president of the institution since; on January 1, 2018, he left that role to serve as chief science officer of Providence St. Joseph Health. Here, Hood shares the many lessons he learned from 17 years at the helm of ISB.

Science teaching experience for postdocs

Congratulations to Nyasha Chambwe (Shmulevich Lab) and Vangelis Simeonidis (Price Lab; pictured above) who have been accepted by the UW STEP Program. Formerly called “Future Faculty Fellows Apprenticeship,” the program provides training sessions that introduce effective teaching strategies, and guide participants through the development and teaching of a 10-week course. Rhishi Bargaje (Hood Lab) was a fellow last year.

ISB’s Summer Interns brightest of the bright

Every summer, ISB and ISB’s Center for Systems Biology welcome undergraduate and high school students for internships in our labs. Each student is paired with a mentor and works on research actually taking place in the respective lab.
